National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a government bursary that has been established to provide financial assistance to students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and wish to further their studies in public institutions.


who is eligible to apply for NSFAS?

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA recipients qualify for NSFAS funding 
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum 
  • A person with a disability: combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum 
  • Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum
  • Applicants should have a valid email address
  • Applicants should have his/her own cell phone number 

Who does not qualify for NSFAS?

  • Foreign students (any student who is not a South African citizen)
  • Student that has completed the previous qualification
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000
  • Students who have already applied, qualified, and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.

What does NSFAS cover?


  • Accommodation as per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum
  • Living allowance R15, 000  per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residences.

  • Registration fees


  • Accommodation in an urban area R24 000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area R15 750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 350  per annum

  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum
  • Tuition fees

Which documents are required to apply for NSFAS funding?

  • ID copy of applicants (if they have a Smart ID card, both sides should be visible on the copy)
  • ID copy of parents/guardian or spouse 
  • Proof of income

Follow these steps to apply for funding 

Step: 1 create myNSFAS profile 

  • Click on register 
  • Complete the required field 
  • Upload your ID copy or birth certificate
  • One Time Pin to activate your account will be sent to the cell phone number you submitted.

Step: 2 Start the application process

  • Click on Apply
  • Complete the required field where applicable 
  • Upload all the required documents 
  • A reference number will be sent to your cell phone number and email address
